Screen Resolutions and Browser Types
So, what are users currently using as far as screen resolutions and browser types?
While this varies from site to site, it’s import to understand your site’s particular audience breakdown before you can make this decision.
Looking at your current web site statistics with any good analytics package will give you a breakdown of the browser capabilities of your site visitors, including screen resolution and browser type. Your particular audience’s makeup should be kept in mind when planning a redesign effort as you want to make sure to provide the best, and most consistent, experience for all of your users.
So, when you’re developing a new web site, where do you begin?
According to the folks at w3schools, over 74% of browsers are currently using a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 or higher, and surprisingly, only about 70 – 75% are using Internet explorer. Over 25% are using Firefox. I myself can attest to be a devoted Firefox user, and, designing your web site to accommodate Firefox is becoming increasingly important, and does takes some consideration and some time.
So, keep this in mind, when designing for web browsers of 1024 x 768 or higher, while it’s best to not locked yourself into a fixed screen width and height as far as your design goes, I would recommend going for 760 wide x 420 high as a minimum, which is 800x600 maximized up to 955 x 600, which is 1024 x 768 maximized. Again, CSS allows you to vary your design to accommodate different browsers, but I would definitely begin to think outside the traditional 640 x 480 box.
